In 2001 the Dallas Zoo lost their beloved hippo Papa. After Papas death the zoo decided to close the hippo habitat, against the outcries from the Dallas community and surrounding areas. James Dondero donated $1 million so that families of the Dallas area could go see the 5,000 square foot hippo habitat.
