First of all, associations are known to be prolific sources of the latest research data and tools. For a beginner in a field, having websites, newsletters, and webinars with information geared to their needs available is a tremendous boost as they feel they do not have to figure everything out on their own. Also, huge conferences which bring together workers and leaders in the particular industry provide many opportunities to hear about job openings and to toss around the latest ideas. Building relationships and staying in touch with people in your field opens up new sources and possibilities in many areas. A chance to mingle with a “Master Architect” like Robert Ivy is a valuable experience for young architects.

Another benefit to belonging to an association is the power behind a number of voices. Political leaders pay attention when a large organization speaks up on issues that affect members. Robert Ivy provides an example involving his organization. Ivy says the collective voice of architects is strong, and their advocacy organization actually had an effect on tax legislation.

Finally, professional organization membership speaks to the integrity of your field. Joining indicates a commitment, not only to the field itself, but to all the changes, trends, and developments that are to come. Committees provide a chance to develop or enhance leadership skills, build resumes, and be recognized. Above all, members have prestige, and the status of belonging. Robert Ivy says there is a code of ethics for the AIA, and by becoming a member, you are letting clients and others know that you adhere to and are held accountable for those values.

Robert Ivy: American Institute of Architects: Leading The World

Robert Ivy is currently Editor in Chief at Architectural Record. He landed that job in 1996 after working at Dean/Dale, Dean and Ivy, and other national publications. Robert Ivy isn’t an architect in the way most would think. He doesn’t design buildings; he bridges the gap between people and architecture.

Over the decades, Robert Ivy’s name became synonymous with award-winning. If he’s not winning the award, then one of the publications he works for is winning the award. Robert Ivy’s won a Crain Award, a McGraw-Hill Award, been named a “Master Architect”, and become a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council.

Robert Ivy is a member of the American Institute of Architects. It’s one of the oldest organizations in America that still exists today. Founded in 1857, the American Institute of Architects was originally called the New York Society of Architects. It’s now headquartered in Washington, D.C.

There are several sides to the American Institute of Architects that people get to see. The American Institute of Architects is mostly about architects standing with a united voice. By uniting, they better able to get their professional points across to government practices and regulations.

Too often, governments limit or prohibit industries from doing something that’s a necessity for survival. The American Institute of Architects represents on behalf of architects doing these times. As a group, they’ve created more legislative and regulatory actions and uses than almost any other industry. They’ve also created unique ways for communities to rebuild.

The American Institute of Architects also helps architects find jobs within their communities. As part of their rebuilding America mentality, it’s important to give the right people the job. That’s where the American Institute of Architects steps in and helps. They also participate in professional interest areas.

Part of leading the world involves educating people on architecture. The easiest way to educate is getting people involved with fun activities. One of those activities includes getting people to name their favorite works of architecture. Arguably, people aren’t that interested in architecture, but that’s the point: get them interested.

The American Institute of Architects also created outreach programs that aim at mayors and community leaders. The hope is that leaders will focus on building more environmentally friendly buildings in their communities.
